Ugo was truly "one-of-a-kind" and unforgettable. Although I remember that he would consider himself a "common man" (like a favourite Dusty Rhodes of the former WWF/ WWE) (I could not leave out a wrestling reference when writing about Ugo as we spent a few nights at Maple Leaf Gardens watching it live), he was anything but. His generosity and kindness were boundless. His influence on peoples' lives, and the memories he created, will continue on indefinitely. He will be very deeply missed. Our sincerest condolences to Sylvia, Isabella, and Giordano, and all of Ugo's family (both immediate and extended). God's Blessings to them all. Rest in peace my friend.

Ugo was a passionate and caring man, and that was immediately apparent to me. He will be dearly missed.

Ugo, I first met him as an Articling Student while doing a real estate property search. I asked him for help and without pause or hesitation he guided me through the task.
Afterwards, we struck up a conversation. It was then I came to find out he was in law school with the lawyer I was doing my articles. We chatted meaningfully then went our separate ways. When I got back to the office and told my principal who I met, she began to regale me with stories of life at Windsor Law with Ugo.
Many years later I would meet Ugo again. Initially as Duty Counsel then as Defence counsel. Ugo was unique or set apart from most lawyers. He didn't wanted to talk law but always seemed interested in how I, my parents and life was going.
I feel privileged to have known Ugo as a lawyer and friend for most of my legal career. He like the other "Ambassadors of Scarborough" knew how to include, welcome and help other counsel and clients. It was just the way it was for Ugo, often referred to as the "Big Guy" for his engaging and helpful ways.
He will be forever missed as a colleague and friend.

He used to visit us at our office down the way from Scarborough courthouse & was always a pleasure to be around because he was always very entertaining. I remember him to be a very honest, true, sarcastic, yet funny person & made each person feel important. It was a pleasure knowing Ugo in this lifetime & I consider myself to be privileged to have met him. Rest in eternal peace Ugo. You have left lasting memories with so many!

Ugo would sit outside on the bench in front of 311 Jarvis and say, “Emma, let me buy you a coffee.” I’d say, “no, I can’t have anymore coffee.” “Ok, I will buy you a sandwich.” He was just that kind of a guy. He’d give away the shirt off his back. Laura Liscio said we should put a little plaque on that bench and call it “Ugo’s bench.” I totally agree. That was his spot.

After listening to Tom speak, I decided to write another message.
Ugo was a loyal friend. He was sensitive and generous. He used to bring me Joe Louie's, vegetables from his garden and once he brought me hen fertilizer when I told him I was killing my balcony herbs. In return, I would fill my pencil case with candy for him when we were together in trial. When he got cranky, I knew it was time for some sugar.
Rest in peace my friend.

Ugo will be greatly missed. Isabella and Giordano, your Dad was an amazing man and would be so proud of the words you spoke in his honour. In the cases we did together over the years, it’s not the facts of the cases that stand out, but the character and sense of humour of your dad when we would talk before and after court. He would gently tease my attempts at learning Italian, but encouraged those efforts as well. He was one of a kind. My condolences to Sylvia, Isabella, Giordano and the whole family.

.. Ugo gave a voice to many who otherwise would not have had the courage to speak on their own behalf publicly in a courtroom. He had a soft spot for those treated ‘the underdog’ by others. As a Defense Lawyer, he unfailingly served each of his clients. As importantly he served the communities where he practiced law, including the community of Regent Park in the City of Toronto where he grew up as a boy with his family.
Ugo believed in the presumption of innocence and provided the best trial defense he could give for each client, even for those who had little payment to give when their trial was done.
He was the type of lawyer who fulfilled his role within our Canadian court system with integrity and pride.
Ugo Cara’s life was about service to others … most importantly to his wife Sylvia and their daughter and son.
Ugo will be dearly missed.

Ugo was a graduate of Windsor Law, Class of 1985.
Throughout the years as a lawyer he became known and loved by so many who work within the court system, as well as family, friends and neighbours in the Toronto and Durham Regions.
Ugo held onto many long-lasting friendships from his time at Windsor Law, including his friendship with this writer, while a best friend to her brothers Tom and Mark.
Ugo practiced as Defense Counsel in the criminal adult and youth courthouses for over 30 years.
He gave much of his time to pro bono work, especially for young adults coming from marginalized families.
Ugo was passionate about the law, and compassionate to those disadvantaged and in trouble.
He treated all, young or old, with respect and kindness.
He had a lively wit and love of debate about any subject.
Ugo gave a voice to many, who otherwise would not have had the courage to speak on their own behalf publicly in a courtroom.
He had a soft spot for those treated ‘the underdog’ by others.
As a Defense Lawyer, he unfailingly served each of his clients.

Ugo was a fierce advocate with a big heart. He cared about his clients and negotiated/advocated good outcomes for them without compromising his principles. He had his crew of buddies he hung out with at 1911 and you could always hear laughter from that group--his laugh being the loudest of all. The character of a person is never more revealing than when you see how they treat others. He had a great relationship with all staff at 1911--one's position didn't matter to Ugo but people did. I observed how kind he was to everyone, how much he engaged with everyone and how full of life he was. When he became a parent, he revealed how important family was to his life. I will miss his larger than life personality and his winning smile.

Ugo was one of the 1st defence counsel I was introduced to back in 2001. A kind, humorous and “bigger than life” gentleman who fought fiercely for his clients. He would occasionally discuss cases that were stuck in his mind, with Q.C.’s David Proctor and Jack Moise at our old office at Eglinton & Warden. I periodically performed some agency and law clerk duties for him for which he was more appreciative than the situation warranted. He was that kind of man - generous, giving, appreciative and most of all, humble.
He so deeply loved his Sylvia and his precious children, Giordano and Isabella. He spoke of you all so often and with such admiration. He loved you dearly.

Uga was a great man, a great lawyer, a great friend. We spent a lot of time together at 311 and Scarborough fighting for the kids, hanging out, laughing and having lunch. A more passionate advocate would be hard to find. I am sure Ugo will find a way to contine to fight for someone, somewhere for something. It was in his nature.

I have known Ugo since my Duty Counsel days so many moons ago. For the first time as a Crown, I just had the opportunity of dealing with him on a contested matter a couple of weeks ago. He was a passionate advocate. He cared deeply for those he represented and served them with integrity and commitment. So very sad to hear of his passing. Wishing you all much strength in the days and months ahead.

I am heart broken to hear this news. He was so young and so full of life and good mischief. Ugo was a sincere, honest and loyal friend. He was unapologetically Ugo and that's what I liked most about him. His candidness, made me laugh, until I cried. When Ugo was in the room, there was always belly laughs. What a great loss to his family, his friends and his clients. My sincere condolences to the family. I will miss you. May you rest in peace my friend.
