Stokman, Adriana (Joanne)

January 1929 - January 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Adriana Teresia (Joanne) Stokman (nee Poel). Joanne was born in 1929 in Beemster, North Holland into a large family (11 siblings). She met her husband Gerry Stokman (predeceased 2010) when she was 21 and not long after immigrated to Canada . They married in Sudbury, Ontario on May 17, 1954 and enjoyed 56 years together. Joanne was a proud Canadian but also would tell anyone who would listen about growing up in the Netherlands. Missed by children and grandchildren, Joanne England (John), Gerry Stokman (Lisa (predeceased), Greg Stokman, Rosemary Van Oostrom (Tony) and grandchildren Leslie Stokman (Adam), Brett Stokman (Lindsay) James Stokman (Emily) , Janine Van Oostrom, Christina McKinnon. Her latest joy was becoming a great grandmother to baby Rae. She was also an unofficial grandmother to the many children she babysat over the years. Joanne loved nothing more than organizing family dinners and spending time with her children and grandchildren . She and husband Gerry spent many happy years with the family building and enjoying the cottage in Bancroft, Ontario and they were happy to share it with many friends and family. Joanne had many activities including, singing in the church choir, gardening, refinishing furniture and of course rug hooking. She loved to be known as the "Happy Hooker". Never at a loss for words, Joanne was a strong willed woman and you always knew where you stood with her whether you liked it or not! The family would like to express our thanks to the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital for the amazing care they provided in the past couple of weeks.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on January 23, 2024 at St. Bernadette's church, 21 Bayly St. Ajax, Ontario with a reception to follow at Accettone Funeral Home, 384 Finley Avenue, Ajax
Friends may make memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in lieu of flowers.
